 The overlay area
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The area of memory in which the overlays are executed is known as the
overlay area, and can reside in conventional memory, Upper Memory Blocks
located above 640 Kb, or the expanded memory pageframe (with some
restrictions on the program regarding EMS use). The size of the overlay area
may be specified at link time via a script file command, or at program
runtime through the BLINKER environment variable.

The minimum overlay area size allowed for any given program is calculated
and displayed by Blinker at link time, and is dependent on the size of the
largest overlaid object module. If no area size is specified at link time,
Blinker will default to 40 Kb, or the calculated minimum value, whichever is
the larger. If a area size is specified, the value will be set to the
specified value, or the minimum value, again, whichever is the larger.

When overlays are not being executed they are stored either on disk or in a
cache in EMS or XMS memory.
