 IPX and SPX functions overview
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) protocol and SPX (Sequenced packet
exchange) protocol allow direct workstation to workstation communications
(peer-to-peer) so when using IPX or SPX, workstations can communicate
directly, without having to go through the fileserver. In fact there does
not even have to be a file server present on the network for IPX and SPX to
work - all that is needed is suitable cabling and the IPX drivers. The only
time a fileserver becomes part of the process is when the two communicating
stations are on different networks, in which case the file server acts as a
 router.
