X-Hacker.org- dBsee 4.6 - The Library - Norton Guide http://www.X-Hacker.org [<<Previous Entry] [^^Up^^] [Next Entry>>] [Menu] [About The Guide]

To insert a lookup relation, proceed as follows:

. Access the definition environment of the database by
pressing the Dictionary button from the dBsee main menu.

. Position the cursor on the file that will be associated the
N:1 relation and press the Relations button.

. Now press the Current File button.

. Using the arrow keys, scroll through the relation tree until
you reach the file to which the relation is to be added.

     . Press the N:1 button.

. From the list that appears, select the source field that
the relation will begin from (from the parent file).

. Now select the Target file for the relation. The target
file is the file on which the existence of the key will be checked.
Press Enter in correspondence to the file desired.

     . Select the relation index.

It is possible, by using the buttons, to define if the relation is to be
created automatically or manually. In the first case, the system creates a
link between the parent and the child file using all the key fields of the
selected index that are available in both files. If at least one field is
in common, dBsee will ask if a Lookup relation is to be created.

. In case that the Automatic creation button is pressed, a
window is displayed with a list of all the links that are created
between the fields of the two files. At the bottom of the screen, a
series a pushbuttons are available. When selecting the automatic
creation, confirmation is asked for by the system.

. In case that the Manual selection button is pressed, a
window is displayed that will contain the link parameters. The
Create link button allows to create the link between the 2 files
based on the selected index. In fact, the list of fields of the parent
file allows the operator to select the relation field. The Unlink
button removes a link set on the the highlighted field. At last, the
Edit link button allows to edit the expression, and to apply for
example a function to the field on which the link is created. The
% or %N character can be used as a substitute for the link
       field.

. At this point, for both automatic and manual creation, the
Confirm relation button confirms the creation of the lookup.

Manual selections allow to set, for each key field of the child file, the
field of the parent file that is to be used to create the relation. The
same selection is proposed by the system when the user tries to create a
relation automatically even though the names differ.

Activating the Edit LookUp button on a field that has been associated
to a LookUp relation will cause the system to automatically bring up the
   relative definition frame.

   --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use the Automatic Creation button when the relational fields in the
parent file and in the child file have the same name.
Use the Manual Selection instead, when one or more key fields of the
child file do not exist in the parent file.
